Savoyard flavors & local craftsmanship

Gastronomy and Crafts

Here in the Pays de Savoie, we are at the heart of a region rich in flavors and culinary traditions, shaped by alpine terroir and breathtaking mountain landscapes. An ideal destination for food lovers, where every bite tells a story of local tradition and craftsmanship. Here’s a glimpse of the local delights you’ll discover on our journeys:

The region is famous for its cheeses, including Reblochon, Beaufort, and Abondance, which will be on our table! Cured meats, such as dry sausage and raw ham, are also must-tries, often enjoyed alongside cheeses and a good glass of wine. The Pays de Savoie produces refreshing white wines, like Apremont and Chignin, perfectly pairing with local dishes.

Don’t miss the orchards, offering a variety of fruits such as apples and pears, often used in delicious tarts. Wild berries—blueberries and raspberries—are a true treat. Alpine flowers provide nectar for bees, producing honey with a unique flavor. Handmade jams are another delight to savor. Freshwater fish such as Féra, Arctic char (Omble Chevalier or Lavaret), and perch are also local specialties.

During our outings, we’ll let you taste and appreciate all these wonders, while sharing insider tips to guide you to the best addresses!

We also shine a spotlight on the skills of local artisans and farmers. You’ll get to visit workshops that aren’t always widely known: craft breweries, biscuit makers, ironwork studios, sheep and goat cheese producers, snail farms, and medicinal and aromatic plant growers…

Exploring alpine gastronomy

Exploring alpine gastronomy

Savoyard cuisine is a true reflection of its terroir, combining tradition and authenticity. The Savoie region offers a rich and comforting palette of flavors, inspired by its majestic landscapes and cultural heritage.

Among the emblematic specialties is Savoyard fondue, a convivial dish made with local cheeses such as Beaufort and Abondance, melted together to create a warm, shared experience around the table. Raclette, another must-try, features melted cheese served with potatoes, vegetables, and cured meats—perfectly comforting after a day in the mountains.

Savoyard dishes are also often accompanied by other local products, such as diots (Savoyard sausages), tartiflette—a savory gratin of potatoes, bacon, and Reblochon cheese—and crozets, traditional regional pasta. Every bite tells a story, that of the farmers and artisans preserving ancestral know-how. For fish lovers, the lakes and rivers offer Féra, Trout, Arctic Char, and more, elevated by talented Savoyard chefs.

Savoyard gastronomy isn’t limited to savory dishes; it also offers a variety of desserts, like blueberry tarts, celebrating mountain fruits, and the famous biscuits de Savoie, light and delicate.

And let’s not forget the refreshing fruit juices and local wines…

By choosing to discover Savoyard gastronomy, you embark on a sensory journey through the Alps, where each dish invites you to savor life slowly, in harmony with nature. A true journey that we invite you to share with us!

Cheese in all its Forms

Cheese in all its Forms

Savoyard cheese is far more than a simple dairy product; it is a true institution that embodies the soul of the Alps. With its mountainous landscapes and centuries-old traditions, Savoie is home to exceptional cheeses, each with its own character and unique qualities.

Whether it’s the famous Beaufort, with its fruity and delicate flavor, the creamy and flavorful Reblochon, or the rustic Tomme de Savoie, full of character, each cheese tells the story of the mountains and the people who shape them. We particularly love Chevrotin and the Thônes and Marthod ewe’s tomme!

Passionate cheese artisans preserve traditional crafting techniques that ensure the quality and authenticity of these products. When it comes to tasting Savoyard cheese, the possibilities are endless. Served in a fondue, as a raclette, or simply with fresh bread and cured meats, each bite invites you to savor conviviality and sharing with Poudre d’Escampette.

Whether you are a cheese lover or simply curious to discover the delights of Savoie, “Cheese in All Its Forms” is a sensory experience not to be missed. Dive with us into this world of flavors and let yourself be enchanted by the richness and diversity of cheeses from our beautiful region.

Poudre d’Escampette – Savoyard delicacies to be savored along a winding path

Some journeys begin with a map and a backpack… And then there are those that begin with the aroma of ripened cheese, the crunch of a still-warm biscuit, the scent of mountain herbal tea, the smile of a craftsman offering a slice of sausage and simply saying:

“Try this, you won’t regret it…”

At Poudre d’Escampette, we’ve chosen to combine the two:

the beauty of the landscapes and the generosity of Savoyard cuisine, cultural discovery and gourmet encounters, hiking or cycling and the shared experience of tasting.

Because the Savoie region isn’t just for sightseeing:

it’s for tasting, savoring, and sharing.

And sometimes, it’s better told in a single bite than in a long speech.

Welcome to our world. Welcome to our mountain picnics, our afternoon snacks by a stream, at the farm, and our tastings with local artisans. Welcome to an experience that awakens the senses, nourishes the soul, and fills the heart as well as the stomach.

We invite you to discover all the activities and outing ideas in the OUR EXPERIENCES section.

Meeting the artisans of our Savoie region: the living soul of our cycling and walking trips

Haute-Savoie and Savoie are a land to be discovered with the eyes, explored on foot, but above all, felt with the heart. Between lakes, deep valleys, ancient forests, and alpine peaks, the beauty of the landscapes is undeniable. Yet, what gives this region its unique character are the women and men who inhabit it, shape it, cultivate it, and enhance it every day. The artisans of Savoie are the guardians of an exceptional heritage of know-how. They work with materials—wood, metal, fabric, milk, stone, plants—with precision and passion. They perpetuate traditions, some centuries old, while adapting them to the modern world, thus revealing the richness of a land where authenticity is a way of life.

At Poudre create a connection: with nature, with the place, and with the people who are its soul.

That is why our bike rides, guided hikes, cultural or gourmet outings are punctuated with stops at the homes of passionate and fascinating artisans, who love to pass on their knowledge, explain, share and introduce their world.

Immersive experience with small local producers

Immersive experience with small local producers

An immersive experience with small producers in the Savoie region

With Poudre d’Escampette, every outing becomes an immersion in the Savoyard terroir. Our tastings, afternoon snacks, and picnics showcase local products: Enter the workshop, understand, smell, taste

There are places where everything suddenly comes alive: the aroma of warm milk in the cheese dairy, the sound of blades in the charcuterie workshop, the herbs drying in the small-scale herbal tea production, the biscuits fresh from the oven, the bottles lined up in a cider house or local microbrewery.

With artisans, you don't just see products.

You see gestures.

The cheesemaker explains how he ages his Tomme cheeses, how he listens to the wheels, how time and patience transform them into flavor. The biscuit maker recounts how she uses her grandmother's recipe, measuring it "by the ladleful," just like in the old days. The herbal tea producer shows you how to recognize a good plant by its aroma, texture, and color. The cider maker speaks of his orchards as if they were an old love story.

And you taste. You smell. You compare. You learn.

These tastings are total immersions, where the product comes alive, where Savoy becomes tangible, where you understand that behind the gustatory pleasure lies a thousand-year-old tradition.

Each product tells a story, the story of its farmers and artisans, their precise gestures, and their passion for local know-how.
